Tarragon 1 - New Oil Field Discovery in South Australia

Santos Ltd, as Operator for the Patchawarra East Block, announces the discovery of a new oil field in the South Australian Section of the Cooper/Eromanga Basins.

The discovery well, Tarragon 1, flowed 500 BOPD of oil from the interval 2306m to 2312m in the Triassic Tinchoo Formation. The flow was recorded through a 13mm (“) surface choke.

Tarragon 1 is located approximately 110km north of the Moomba Gas Plant, 8km north of the Cuttapirrie Oil and Gas Field and 35km from the oil production facility at the Keleary Field. An early connection opportunity exists due to the close proximity of the well to the existing facilities at the Keleary Field.

A further two open hole drill stem tests are planned of potential oil zones in the Jurassic Poolowanna Formation and Hutton Sandstone.

Mike Hannell, General Manager of the South Australian Business Unit, commented on the find as “being a positive outcome for Santos in its search for additional oil reserves. The well is part of the $200 million accelerated exploration programme in South Australia as announced in February 1996 and follows on from the successful Carmina 1 oil field discovery in September 1996.”

The participants in the Tarragon 1 well are:

  • Santos Group 86.4592%
  • Delhi Petroleum Pty Ltd 0.0000%
  • Boral Energy Resources Limited 10.5360%
  • Crusader Resources NL 2.9688%

* Delhi elected not to participate in the drilling of this well
