Santos Ltd, as Operator for the South West Queensland Unit Producers, is pleased to announce the official opening today of the upgraded Ballera Gas Plant by the Premier of Queensland, the Honourable Rob Borbidge MLA.

The opening marks the completion of the second phase of the Ballera development as part of the process of supplying gas from South West Queensland to customers in Brisbane and other centres in South East Queensland.

The total investment over time by Santos and the other Producers in supplying gas to South East Queensland, including the cost of plant upgrade and field development, will be approximately $175 million.

In undertaking the project, the construction workforce peaked at some 300 personnel.

Commenting, Rod McArdle – General Manager, Queensland and Northern Territory said:

“The upgrading of the Ballera Gas Plant represents an important step in the development of South West Queensland. The Ballera Gas Plant development will facilitate the supply of sales gas to existing and potential customers in South East and North West Queensland”.

Construction of the original Ballera Gas Plant commenced in 1991 when the Queensland Government agreed to allow the South West Queensland Unit Producers to complete the sale of 300 petajoules (PJ) of sales gas to South Australia. The original Plant had limited capacity and further processing was required at Moomba in South Australia.

The interests of the South West Queensland Unit Producers are:

  • Boral Energy Resources Ltd 16.5000%
  • Gulf Australia Hydrocarbons Ltd 1.2000%
  • Oil Company of Australia Ltd 0.2375%
