Last night the Santos Board hosted the company’s 13th EHS Directors Awards, an annual event that celebrates the very best in safety and environmental performance at Santos.
The awards recognise safety and environmental excellence across six categories, with team awards for Innovation, Efficiency, Environment and Safety, and individual awards for the Environment Leader of the Year and Safety Leader of the year. Each winner received a $1000 donation to the charity of their choice.
Commenting on the quality of the award nominations, Santos Managing Director and CEO, Kevin Gallagher said “This year we received a record 76 quality nominations, the highest number in the 13 year history of the awards. It was very difficult for the Board to narrow this down the 12 finalists, and ultimately select and the six winners”.
The evening belonged to Glenn Watt, Manager of Drilling and Completions who took out both the Safety and Environmental Leader awards, while the Drilling and Completions Team which Glenn leads also took out the Environment Team of the Year award.
Mr Gallagher commented “Glenn’s strong safety commitment and leadership was instrumental to Drilling and Completions team achieving its best safety record since 2014. This was accomplished while delivering reduced operating costs and efficiencies across diverse, work environments for the Narrabri and the GLNG drilling and completions campaigns.
“Glenn is described as a passionate and committed environment leader who challenges his team to develop innovative projects to reduce delivery costs and improve the team’s environmental performance. Under Glenn’s stewardship, the team has also taken full ownership and responsibility of the management of residual drilling materials, chemical recycling and produced water resource planning. This impressive list of environmental milestones also saw the Drilling and Completions team recognised as the Environment Team of the Year.”
The Santos GLNG Upstream Operations took out the Innovation award, being recognised for the use of drone technology to carry out plant visual inspection, which eliminated the risk of having personnel working at heights of up to 60 metres to carry out such inspections.
The Efficiency category prize was awarded to the Port Bonython team for their Energy Optimisation projects which resulted in a reduction of around 7 to 10 percent in fuel requirements, equating to a reduction in carbon emissions of 30,260 tonnes per annum, equivalent to removing 6,400 cars off the road.
The Cooper Development Program Execution Team was awarded the Safety Team of the year for their safety turnaround which was underpinned by a range of effective safety initiatives which saw safety incidents more than halve from peak.
Mr Gallagher said: “Safety is part of our DNA at Santos and we are proud of our strong safety and environmental performance. In 2016 Santos recorded the lowest injuries on record, while implementing transformational change to turnaround our business. This shows even in times of constant change, our people are focussed on staying safe, and protecting the sensitive environments where we operate.”
