COSTA CENTRAL 1

Santos Ltd, as Operator for the South West Queensland Unit, announces a successful gas exploration well in the Queensland sector of the Cooper/Eromanga Basins.

The exploration well, Costa Central 1, flowed gas at 43,330 cubic metres per day (1.53 million cubic feet per day) with 24 kilolitres (148 barrels) of 53.3 API condensate per day from reservoir sands in the Permian Patchawarra Formation over the interval 2244 – 2260m. The test, which was flowed through a 13mm (0.5) surface choke, was conducted over only one of the multiple gas bearing reservoirs intersected in the well.

Costa Central 1 is located 2 km southwest of the Costa Field and 16 km east of the Queensland Gas Centre, Ballera.

The well will be cased and suspended as a future gas producer.

Commenting, Mr Rod McArdle, General Manager – Queensland and Northern Territory said:

In South West Queensland, Costa Central 1 is the twelfth successful gas exploration well drilled this year and has contributed to an overall success rate of 71% for gas exploration drilling in South West Queensland during 1997.

Four gas exploration wells are currently being drilled in South West Queensland with a further six wells expected to be spudded before year end.
