Approval for Legendre Development

Approval for Legendre Development

Santos announced today that the WA-1-P Joint Venture (operated by Woodside) has committed to development of the Legendre oil fields in the Carnarvon Basin, offshore Western Australia.

Development of the fields is expected to cost approximately A$110 million gross (Santos share A$25 million).

The Legendre fields lie 104 km north northwest of Dampier in water depths of 45 60 metres. The Legendre North field was discovered in 1968 by Legendre-1 which was the first offshore oil flow in Western Australia. Subsequent appraisal drilling in 1997 saw Legendre-3 (previously called Jaubert-1) confirm the extent of the field and in 1998 Legendre South-1 discovered a separate field to the south.

The operators Development Plan is based on the Legendre fields having proved and probable reserves of 40.4 million barrels of oil (Santos share 9.1 million barrels of oil).

The operator expects production to commence in mid-2001 with peak gross production of 40,000 barrels per day (Santos share 9,000 barrels of oil per day).

The proposed development plan has:

  • Four horizontal production wells (three in the Legendre North field and one in the Legendre South field) and one gas reinjection well to be directionally drilled and connected to a Mobile Offshore Production Unit (MOPU);
  • Production via facilities to be installed on the MOPU, a converted jackup rig;
  • A Production Export System which comprises a 2.5 kilometre infield pipeline and a Catenary Anchor Leg Mooring (CALM) buoy system; and the
  • Export of oil via a dedicated Floating Storage and Offloading vessel or directly to a tanker.

Commenting on the decision, the Managing Director of Santos, Mr Ross Adler said: The Legendre development is an important project for the company which will make a material contribution to our future oil production.

Participants in the WA-1-P Joint Venture are:

  • Woodside Energy Limited 45.94% (Operator)
  • Apache Energy Limited 31.50%
  • Santos Limited 22.56%
