Gunnedah Basin

Santos began exploring for gas in the Gunnedah Basin in New South Wales in 2008, completing seismic survey and drilling core holes to assist in the assessment of the area’s geology. This work was carried out in the areas covered by Santos’ exploration leases, including areas around Gunnedah and in the Upper Hunter. Approval documents for these activities can be found on the Narrabri Gas Project website.

In 2010, our first pilot in NSW, the four-well Kahlua pilot, was completed on privately owned land west of Gunnedah.

In November 2011, Santos completed its acquisition of Eastern Star Gas’ (ESG) acreage and operations near Narrabri, including six completed pilots in and around the Pilliga.

An extensive review and upgrade of facilities commenced, a number of operational sites were rehabilitated and eight new wells and one core hold were drilled to assist with the exploration and appraisal of the Narrabri resource.

The results of the exploration and appraisal program near Narrabri have led to Santos seeking approval to develop the Narrabri Gas Project. The Development Application, including the Environmental Impact Statement for the Project, is currently being assessed by the Government.
