Santos began exploring for gas in the Gunnedah Basin in New South Wales in 2008, completing seismic survey and drilling core holes to assist in the assessment of the area’s geology. This work was carried out in the areas covered by Santos’ exploration leases, including areas around Gunnedah and in the Upper Hunter. Approval documents for these activities can be found on the Narrabri Gas Project website.
In 2010, our first pilot in NSW, the four-well Kahlua pilot, was completed on privately owned land west of Gunnedah.
In November 2011, Santos completed its acquisition of Eastern Star Gas’ (ESG) acreage and operations near Narrabri, including six completed pilots in and around the Pilliga.
The development of a project based around these resources near Narrabri, the Narrabri Gas Project, is the focus of Santos’ work in NSW.
Santos does hold additional acreage across the broader north-west region. Future development of acreage outside the Narrabri Gas Project area is not currently planned and would only proceed with landholder consent and thorough community consultation.
