Barossa Gas Project: Learn more

Santos Ltd, as Operator for the South West Queensland Unit, today announced that it has discovered a new gas field in the Queensland sector of the Cooper Basin, 135 kilometres south of the Ballera Gas Facility.

The exploration well, Quasar 1, has a high flow rate of 10.8 million cubic feet per day, the fourth highest flow rate encountered to date in South West Queensland.

Santos Managing Director John Ellice-Flint said,

“”This discovery has set new records for gas exploration in South West Queensland. It is the fastest gas wildcat drilled to date, with drilling time of 7.8 days compared with 9 days for the previous fastest well””

The well flowed gas to surface in four minutes, at a rate of 705,800 cubic metres per day (10.8 million cubic feet per day), from a reservoir sandstone in the Patchawarra formation over the interval 2317m-2334m through a 13mm (0.5″”) surface choke. The indicative net pay for the well is 26 metres.

The well will be connected to a new gas pipeline that is soon to be constructed connecting the Chiron Field with the Cooper Basin gas gathering network.
