Barossa Gas Project: Learn more

Santos Limited advises that the Reindeer 1 exploration well located in the northern part of WA-209-P in the Carnarvon Basin will be cased and suspended as a gas discovery.

Electric logs indicate a gas column over the interval 2409m MD-2495mMD with approximately 65m of net pay in the sandstones of the Middle Jurassic Legendre Formation.

Gas samples were recovered from the gas column using downhole sampling. Core, log and pressure test data indicated the presence of an excellent reservoir, thereby eliminating the need to test the well.

Reindeer 1 appears to be a relatively small field (around 200 BCF) which is unlikely to be economic on a stand alone basis. Therefore the focus of further activity will be upon increasing the reserve base in the immediate vicinity whilst investigating possible development options including supply of gas to nearby offshore oil developments for use in field operations.

Commenting on the discovery, the Managing Director of Santos, Mr Ross Adler said:

“Reindeer 1 confirms the existence of a new play type in the Middle Jurassic Legendre Formation. This holds encouraging ramifications for exploration potential in nearby areas.”

The Joint Venture participants in Reindeer 1 are:

  • Santos Group 54.17%
  • Apache Energy 33.33%
  • Globex Far East 12.50%.
