Barossa Gas Project: Learn more

Santos Ltd, as Operator for the South West Queensland Unit, announces the discovery of a new gas field in the Queensland sector of the Cooper/Eromanga Basins. This follows the successful Costa Central 1 gas exploration well located in South West Queensland which was announced yesterday.

The exploration well, Whanto 1, flowed gas at 113,270 cubic metres per day (4.0 million cubic feet per day) from reservoir sands in the Permian Toolachee Formation over the interval 2973 – 2991m. The test was conducted through a 13mm (0.5) surface choke.

Whanto 1 is located 47 km south of the Marama Gas Field and 110 km north-northeast of the Queensland Gas Centre and is being drilled as a dual South West Queensland Unit and Wareena Block well by both Joint Ventures.

The well will be cased and suspended as a future gas producer.

Commenting, Mr Rod McArdle, General Manager – Queensland and Northern Territory said:

The Whanto 1 new field discovery is significant in that it is the second discovery in the sparsely explored northern Wareena Block and opens a potentially rewarding new play fairway.
