Santos today announced a major sponsorship deal for the Tour Down Under that will further enhance the standing of the nation’s premier cycling event, and its contribution to the South Australian community.

Santos will become the Naming Rights sponsor of the event, which from today will be presented as the Santos Tour Down Under. The first staging of the Santos Tour Down Under will take place from 17-24 January 2010. This is a new 4-year partnership for Santos and is a further addition to Santos’ substantial community program.

“The Santos Tour Down Under is a world-class sporting event and we are pleased to support an event that provides substantial economic and community benefits for South Australia,” said Santos Chief Executive Officer David Knox. “The event is deserving of a major partner and we are confident this partnership will help to strengthen the standing of the Santos Tour for years to come.”

“Not only is the Tour enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people across the state, it has a significant positive economic impact on the local economy. Santos is pleased that this sponsorship will help increase those economic benefits to the community.”

“Santos’ energy interests throughout Australia and the Asia-Pacific have expanded significantly since the company was founded in South Australia 55 years ago, and we retain a strong connection to the state. We are pleased to be associated with an event that highlights South Australia’s many fine attributes to both national and global audiences.”

“Cycling is a healthy and environmentally friendly recreational activity that is enjoyed by people of all ages, and this was part of the attraction for us.”

Santos has long embraced its role as a leading South Australian corporate citizen with a wide range of sponsorships and direct funding for entities including the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the Australian School of Petroleum at the University of Adelaide, the Adelaide Zoo, the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide and the Art Gallery of South Australia. Over the past year, additional sponsorships have included support to enable the Royal Institution and the University College London to establish in Adelaide.
