Mutineer-1B

MUTINEER-1B

The Mutineer-1B well in permit WA-191-P was plugged and abandoned as an oil discovery on 18 August 1998 having drilled to a total depth of 3399 metres.

The well encountered an 8 metre oil column in the Angel Formation between shales at 3120 and 3128 metres. No oil-water contact was encountered in this zone. Oil samples were recovered by wireline (MDT) which showed the oil to be 41 API, low sulphur with a low gas-oil ratio. A core was obtained across the oil column indicating good porosity and permeability in the reservoir.

A drill-stem test was in preparation on 13 August but had to be aborted for mechanical reasons and the well was plugged and abandoned. The well data are under review.

Dr John Armstrong, General Manager – Offshore Australia Business Unit, said:

This is an encouraging result. The Joint Venture will now review the results to consider the next steps in respect of the field and review the possibility of exploration wells on nearby prospects in the permit.

The permit holders in permit WA-191-P are:
