The GLNG project will pipe gas from fields near Roma in south east Queensland via a 435 kilometre pipeline to a liquefaction plant on Curtis Island, off Gladstone, from where it will be shipped to Asian markets.
GLNG President Rick Wilkinson said GLNG was the first major integrated CSG-to-LNG project to release an EIS for public comment – an important step in the environmental assessment process for the project.
“This comprehensive document will be made available on Monday 22 June. It is the result of almost 18 months of investigations by environmental and other specialists to examine the impacts and benefits of the GLNG project,” he said. “At almost 13,500 pages of general and technical information, the GLNG EIS assesses the project impact from our gas fields near Roma, to the proposed plant on Curtis Island.”
The EIS examines the impacts and benefits of the three major project components:
- Coal seam gas fields (near Roma)
- Transmission gas pipeline (435km pipeline connecting Roma to Curtis Island)
- LNG liquefaction and export facility on Curtis Island
Mr Wilkinson said the Coordinator-General had reviewed a draft of the EIS to ensure that it sufficiently addressed the terms of reference, and to allow assessment of the project to progress to a new public consultation stage.
“This important stage of public consultation is a major milestone for the project.”
“The development of the GLNG project will see the creation of thousands of jobs in regional Queensland and bring long-term benefits to the communities in which we are working, from our coal seam gas fields around Roma to the site of the LNG plant in Gladstone.”
“Up to 6,000 jobs would be created in the development of the three train LNG plant outlined in the Environmental Impact Statement.”
“GLNG will now commence a fourth round of full public consultation meetings and briefings throughout the State.”
“To help make the EIS easier to navigate, Santos and PETRONAS have developed a summary handbook for stakeholders, which is designed to sit alongside the EIS.”
“This handbook outlines key findings in the EIS, but importantly, refers interested members of the public to the sections of the EIS in which they can find further information on specific topics, such as water management, bird species, or economic benefits for the regions.”
