Discovered
The Moonie field was discovered in 1961 by the Moonie 1 exploration well.
First Production
Production commenced in 1964, following construction of the Moonie–Brisbane oil pipeline.
Facility Details
The field is in the latter stages of decline with very high water cut and most of the 50 wells at Moonie and the nearby satellite fields being shut in. Less than 10 wells are still producing.
Moonie acts as a gathering hub for other smaller nearby fields – Alton, Cabawin and Leichardt – which are also either fully depleted or close to the end of their producing lives.
Production is sent via a 299 kilometre 10 inch pipeline to Brisbane.
Water is provided by bores and 2.5MW electricity generation capacity is on site. The field is serviced by an emergency dirt airstrip with primary road access.
