During February 2007, Santos subsidiary, Santos International Operations Pty Ltd, was awarded a 100% working interest and operatorship of blocks NEC-DWN-2004/1 and NEC-DWN-2004/2, covering approximately 16,500 square kilometres in the Bengal Basin, in the northern Bay of Bengal, offshore India.

Santos has committed to an eight-year US$70 million (A$90 million) work program covering the two offshore deep water exploration licences. The blocks are approximately 250 kilometres south-south-east of Kolkata and 175 kilometres from the Indian coast, in water depths of between 400 and 2,300 metres.
