Glossary/Units
Barrel/bbl
The standard unit of measurement for all production and sales. One barrel equals 159 litres or 35 imperial gallons.
Billion BTU
Billion British Thermal Units. 1BTU sales gas = 1.055KJ
1Therm sales gas = 1.055KJ
BOE
Barrel of oil equivalent.
Choke Sizes
The diameter of the orifice plate (measurement device) through which production (gas, liquid or mixture) is passed. The differential across the orifice plate provides a measure of the fluid rate (gas, liquid or mixture). Choke sizes in Santos are usually given in imperial terms as a fraction of an inch (eg: 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch)
Condensate
Normally exists in the reservoir as gas, but condenses out as a liquid during production.
Cooper Basin Sales Gas
Comprised predominantly of methane and minor ethane.
Joule
The metric unit for energy. The equivalent imperial measure to joules is British Thermal Units (BTU). One kilojoule = 0.9478 BTU.
GJ
Gigajoule =
1 Thousand MegajoulesKBOE
Thousand barrels of oil equivalent.
KJ
Kilojoule
kPa
Pascals are the metric unit for pressure. One kilopascal (kPa) is a thousand Pascals. One kPa is approximately equal to 0.145 pounds per square inch.
LNG
Liquefied natural gas. Conversion factor varies depending on composition of gas.
LPG
Liquefied petroleum gas. Normally comprises propane and butane.
MJ
Megajoule = 1 million joules
MMCF
Million cubic feet
MMCM
Million cubic metres
Pressure
The force per unit area exerted on a container by a fluid within it. Increasing the amount of fluid in the container or the temperature, without changing the volume of the container increases the pressure.
TJ
Terajoule
PJ
Petajoule
PSI
Pounds per square inch
