Almost 80 Santos employees ripped through the floorboards at the Adelaide Velodrome last Sunday, at the ‘Come and Try Day’ hosted exclusively for Santos by Cycling SA*.
With the launch of the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under earlier last week and the excitement of the Tour De France, not to mention the London 2012 Olympics being now only a few weeks away, it seemed only fitting for Santos to find inspiration in track cycling during the cold winter months.
Hosted by four-time world track champion Shane Kelly and Commonwealth Games champion Jason Niblett, the event gave employees the opportunity to try their track speed and defy gravity on the state-of-the-art, 43° banked circuit.
Both Shane and Jason led the teams on the track climbing higher and higher to the bank, allowing the cyclists to familiarise themselves with their ‘pista’ bikes and the track.
After an hour, the cyclists stopped for a quick break. Shane and Jason enjoyed entertaining participants with Olympic yarns and general cycling tips; inspiration for another turn at the track and into ‘serious mode’, pushing the pista’s to their limits.
Shane Kelly was clearly impressed with how quickly the Santos crew gained confidence, commenting “it was very encouraging to work with such a great group of people that were so eager to get out and have a go”.
Also, keeping with the cycling theme, you may have noticed a few cycling shots in the foyer this week. These have been photographed by Mark Gunter, winner of the Cycling Australia photograph of the year, four of the past eight years.
