As major sponsor of the Aboriginal Power Cup, Santos is proud to put its energy into fueling goals for hundreds of South Australian indigenous students.
This year two schools realised their dream of playing in the Aboriginal Power Cup Grand Final in front of thousands of fans at AAMI Stadium.
Now in its fifth year, the Aboriginal Power Cup combines an Australian Rules Football Carnival and a two-semester study program in a unique program that has a growing record of encouraging Indigenous students to complete their secondary education.
‘While the football is important, and the ultimate prize is getting to play on AMMI Stadium, it’s not all about football,’ said Santos’ VP Eastern Australia James Baulderstone.
‘The students must complete set assignments, achieve a high level of school attendance and meet strict behavioral requirements over two-semesters in order to be eligible to play in the Final. And the reward for all their hard work is to play on AMMI Stadium as a curtain raiser to the Power’s AFL Indigenous Round clash with North Melbourne.’
Over 300 South Australian indigenous students from 25 high schools participated in this year’s carnival, with Murray Bridge High School meeting Salisbury High School in both the boys and girls Grand Finals.
The Aboriginal Power Cup Grand Final boys competition was taken out by Salisbury High School (11.8.74) to Murray Bridge High School (8.9.57), and the girls competition by Murray Bridge High School (7.9.51) to Salisbury High School (3.5.23).
Salisbury High School also took out the SA Government’s Curriculum Excellence Award, the Santos Staff Leadership Award and the SAPOL Best War Cry Award
Other winners at the Aboriginal Power Cup were:
• The UniSA Best Guernsey Design went to Coober Pedy Area School and Maree Aboriginal School
• The Solid Team Award went to Windsor Gardens Vocational College (girls) and Murray Bridge High School (boys)
• The SANFL Best Football Team Award went to Port Augusta Secondary School (girls) and Le Fevre High School and Ocean View High School (boys)
Santos has supported the Aboriginal Power Cup since 2010 as its major sponsor. As well as providing vital funds, 30 Santos employees helped at the Carnival by staffing our Careers Expo site, delivering Leadership workshops, goal umpiring or just cheering on the teams.
