Last week Santos and Cycling NSW announced the Santos North Western Tour, a major new road cycling event running from Narrabri to Tamworth.
The inaugural race will take place in 2012 from June 21-24. From 2013 onwards the tour will be staged in early April.
The Santos North Western Tour will become Cycling NSW’s “blue ribbon” road race. Cycling NSW CEO Kevin Young says having Santos on board as the major sponsor will attract Australia’s best National Road Series teams, greatly helping the event's chances of becoming one of the premier dates on Australia’s National Road Series Tour calendar.
The race is expected to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars of economic benefit for the region. Santos Manager Community and Government Affairs Sam Crafter said Santos was pleased to expand its support for cycling in New South Wales, reflecting the company’s growing presence in the region.
“The Santos North Western Tour builds on our existing sponsorship of the Keagan Downes Memorial Sundowner in Gunnedah to create an exciting regional tour throughout the communities where we live and work in New South Wales. This partnership reflects Santos’ commitment to investing in New South Wales’ regional communities,” Sam said.
The differentiating factor between the Santos North Western Tour and other existing National Road Series Tour events in Australia is that the Santos North Western Tour will cater for both Men’s and Women’s teams, which supports Cycling NSW’s current strategy focused around developing women’s cycling in NSW and Australia.
