Desert Country: a history of desert painting

09 Nov 2010

Santos staff at the Desert Country exhibition.

As the principal partner of the Art Gallery of South Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander collection, Santos is proud to support Desert Country – an exhibition that charts the 40-year evolution of the internationally acclaimed Australian desert painting movement.

Santos’ contribution will fund the staging of Desert Country in Adelaide and a two-year national tour. It also provided for a free-to-the-public opening weekend.

On the Thursday night after the exhibition opened, Santos employees and their families were treated to a private viewing with tours led by curator Nici Cumpston, and fantastic indigenous dancers and hip-hop crews in the gallery’s courtyard.

Santos has been a long-time supporter of the gallery through its sponsorship of the Santos Atrium – the gallery’s principal space to display indigenous art – and many special exhibitions.

Desert Country runs at the Art Gallery of SA until 26 January 2011 before touring in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia.
